The Ram. Historically the first constellation of the zodiac, marking the vernal equinox about 2,000 years ago. Precession has since moved the equinox into Pisces. Hamal is the brightest star, an orange giant 66 light-years away. Aries is small and relatively faint. The ram whose golden fleece Jason sought in Greek mythology. Contains the spiral galaxy NGC 772 and the dwarf irregular galaxy NGC 1156.
