About Lacerta
The Lizard. Introduced by Johannes Hevelius in the late 1600s to fill a gap between Cygnus and Andromeda. Its faint stars form a small zigzag in the Milky Way. BL Lacertae was first catalogued as a variable star but turned out to be the bright core of a distant galaxy. It gave its name to BL Lac objects, a type of blazar with a jet pointed almost directly at Earth.
