The Air Pump. Introduced by the French astronomer Nicolas Louis de Lacaille in the 1750s to honor the air pump invented by Denis Papin and improved by Robert Boyle. A faint constellation whose brightest star, Alpha Antliae, is an orange giant of only fourth magnitude. Contains the spiral galaxy NGC 2997 and the Antlia Cluster of galaxies. Best seen in March and April from southern latitudes.
