About Argo Navis

The great ship of the Argonauts, described by Ptolemy as a single vast constellation and by far the largest in the ancient sky. In the 1750s Nicolas Louis de Lacaille carved it into Carina the keel, Puppis the stern, and Vela the sails, and the IAU made the split official in 1930. Had it survived, Argo Navis would still be the largest constellation today. Its stars share one set of Bayer letter names spread across the three parts.
