About Grus

The Crane. Introduced by Petrus Plancius from Keyser and de Houtman observations in the 1590s. Its stars were earlier counted as part of Piscis Austrinus. Alnair, the brightest star, is a hot blue-white star. Beta Gruis is a red giant whose brightness varies. The Grus Quartet is a group of four interacting spiral galaxies. A long neck of stars gives the constellation a recognizable bird shape.
