About Southern Pointers
The line through Alpha and Beta Centauri, the brightest stars of Centaurus, points toward the long axis of the Southern Cross. Extending the line about four and a half times its own length reaches the south celestial pole. Alpha Centauri is the nearest star system to the Sun. For southern navigators these pointers play the role that Merak and Dubhe play in the north.
