About Volans

The Flying Fish. Created by Plancius from Keyser and de Houtman observations in the 1590s. A small constellation between Carina and the Large Magellanic Cloud. Gamma Volantis is an attractive double star of gold and white components. The barred spiral NGC 2442, nicknamed the Meathook Galaxy for its distorted arm, lies in Volans. Never visible from most of the Northern Hemisphere.
